During adolescence, many young people are exploring their sexual identity, gender identity and gender expression. While this can be an exciting time, the process of self-discovery can also be extremely stressful. Fear of being different, along with cultural and peer pressures, may cause teens to question their gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation. Bullying, fear of rejection and the chronic stress associated with having a seemingly stigmatized identity can put significant strain on an LGBTQ+ teen’s mental health. In fact, research shows that LGBTQ+ youth have much higher levels of suicidal ideation than their heterosexual peers.
